SUMMARY:ABA Section of Dispute Resolution Annual Spring Conference
DESCRIPTION:The ABA Section of Dispute Resolution Spring Conference is the largest ADR conference in the world\, typically attracting up to 700+ participants. Attendees gather to learn the latest in dispute resolution techniques and trends\, exchange ideas with experts and peers\, and strengthen their professional relationships. The 2022 ABA Section of Dispute Resolution Spring Conference will be held in Los Angeles\, CA from April 27-30 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites. \nThe theme of the 2022 Spring Conference:\nWhere Do We Grow from Here? New Directions and Rejuvenation\nAs we transition into a new era\, will we expand our reliance on technology or return to more traditional in-person connections? The other side of the pandemic presents opportunities to apply new approaches and lessons learned to advance and diversify our profession\, our teaching\, and our service to parties. Yet\, for some of us\, a return to pre-pandemic practices holds the greatest appeal. This year the Spring Conference looks to examine what we gain and lose as we explore hybrid systems\, new developments\, and established approaches to our profession. The conference programs will explore the evolution of legal representation\, dispute resolution systems and practice\, court systems\, and legal education in our new era. \nIn addition to our dispute resolution themed programs\, this year we are collaborating with the ABA Solo\, Small Firm and General Practice Division to include in the agenda a group of programs that will appeal to general practice\, solo\, and small firm practitioners. \nOur plan is to hold the conference in-person. All in-person events will follow local and CDC public health guidelines and regulations. We may also incorporate virtual programs as a supplement to the in-person conference\, subject to demand and capacity. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:International Intellectual Property and Arbitration: Innovation for a Better Future
DESCRIPTION:SVAMC is thrilled participate in the Guangzhou Arbitration Commission’s symposium entitled:  International Intellectual Property and Arbitration: Innovating for a Better Future. Among other esteemed speakers\, SVAMC CEO Sarah Reynolds (Goldman Ismail LLP\, Managing Partner) will be speaking on the arbitrability of IP disputes in the United States. \nGlobally\, transnational corporations and high-tech corporations are stepping up to meet the innovation and challenges of intellectual property. Transnational intellectual property commercial disputes are intertwined with bursts of energy\, ingenuity\, curiosity\, creativity and the path to a better future. Commercial arbitration\, one of the commercial dispute resolution mechanisms\, provides an effective way for transnational intellectual property commercial disputes. The New York Convention provides a worldwide commercial arbitration settlement mechanism\, but the particularity of the intellectual property system\, especially the public law\, determines that each contracting state has a different intellectual property arbitration system. \nSVAMC looks forward to continued collaboration with the Guangzhou Arbitration Commission. \nDate & Time\nMonday\, April 25\n19:30-22:30 Beijing Time\n13:30-16:30 Germany\n7:30-10:30am Eastern \nJoin a Zoom meeting \n\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/82719348743?pwd=RzN1RkRtNWtNUHRKQlpiTExmd3BzUT09 \n\n\nConference number: 827 1934 8743 \n\n\nPassword: 283712

SUMMARY:ABA International Arbitration Skills Masterclass
DESCRIPTION:The ABA International Law Section is holding an International Arbitration Skills Masterclass: a two-day hands-on virtual training program\, delivered by some of the world’s best international arbitration lawyers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Masterclass\, which is aimed primarily at junior to mid-level practitioners\, will comprise a mixture of panel discussions and practice sessions\, covering all aspects of an arbitral hearing (opening statements\, examination of witnesses\, examination of experts\, and closing statements). \nWorld-leading international arbitration practitioners and arbitrators will share their experiences and advice on how to deliver powerful oral submissions and effectively examine witnesses. There will also be a session on top tips for making an impact in a hearing. \nAfter each panel discussion\, the participants will have an opportunity to develop their advocacy and witness-examination skills through practice sessions in groups of four participants. Each practice session will be supervised by an experienced faculty member\, who will provide participants with tailored feedback. \nFollowing the success of the inaugural 2021 edition of the Masterclass\, the 2022 edition will include one innovation: a mock arbitral hearing demonstration\, which will see two leading practitioners demonstrate a variety of strategies and techniques by delivering oral submissions and cross-examining experienced experts. \nThe event will also provide an excellent networking opportunity\, including through a virtual networking event. \nSVAMC Discount Code: SVS022 \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:The Pacific Shift: Has International Arbitration's Center of Gravity Moved?
DESCRIPTION:SVAMC is pleased to host a virtual panel\, “The Pacific Shift: Has International Arbitration’s Center of Gravity Moved?” during California  International Arbitration Week taking place March 14-18\, 2022. \nThis session will explore the changing locus of international disputes\, as arbitration’s center of gravity inexorably moves toward the Pacific.  Coincidentally or otherwise\, this westward (from a US viewpoint) move has also seen an uptick in technology companies’ engagement with ADR.  Will this presage a decade of dispute resolution within and among the tech-centric Pacific Rim industries — and what might this represent for California’s role in international arbitration?\n\nA panel of distinguished arbitrators and counsel from the SVAMC will consider these important questions. \n\nDate & Time \nWednesday\, March 16\, 2022\n8:30am – 9:45am Pacific \nSVAMC Speakers \n\nChiann Bao\, Arbitration Chambers\nEric Chang\, Chang Law\nLes Schiefelbein\, Schiefelbein Global Dispute Resolution\nPaul Cohen\, SVAMC\nSandra Jeskie\, Duane Morris LLP\n\n  \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:The Secret Sauce: What Conditions Should Exist for International Arbitration to Thrive In an Emerging Technology Hub
DESCRIPTION:New technologies are —by definition— borderless and poised to permeate and have a direct impact on all aspects\nof modern life. Interestingly\, the industries that produce new technologies are generally clustered in certain\ngeographical areas where favorable conditions exist to promote innovation\, creativity\, business entrepreneurship\nand cultural acceptance. From the famed Silicon Valley to cities like Singapore\, London\, Tel Aviv\, Tokyo\, New York\,\nand Shanghai; technology hubs owe their success to both individual advantages and certain shared features such as\ngovernment support\, the presence of robust scientific and academic institutions\, an active private sector\, and a\nhighly qualified legal community. \nThis roundtable sponsored by the Miami International Arbitration Society (MIAS) and the Silicon Valley Arbitration \nand Mediation Center (SVAMC) and hosted by White & Case LLP\, will feature several legal experts hailing from\ntechnology companies\, law firms\, and arbitral institutions from different parts of the world to share their views\nabout the ideal dispute resolution infrastructure that should exist in an emerging technology hub. \nThe roundtable will be followed by a cocktail reception. This event is free and open to the public\, but registration is\nrequired at https://secretsaucemiami.eventbrite.com. Space is limited due to health and safety regulations. \nDate & Time\nDecember 11\, 2021\n3:00pm-6:00pm PST\n6:00pm-9:00pm EST \nRegistration\nRegister here \nProgram\nWelcome: \n\nAdolfo Jimenez\, Partner\, Holland & Knight and Chairman\, Miami International Arbitration Society (Miami)\n\nFeatured speakers: \n\nNir Keidar\, Partner\, Gornitzky (Tel Aviv)\nHumberto N. SUMMARY:Accelerating Change from our Blind Spots in International Dispute Resolution
DESCRIPTION:SVAMC is proud to participate in this webinar hosted by the California Lawyers Association (CLA). \nWhere are our blind spots when it comes to culture and diversity in international dispute resolution? Arbitration and mediation are processes premised on their constituencies agreeing to resolve future or existing disputes with the assistance of an independent neutral or group of neutrals. In arbitration\, we rely on the arbitrator to fairly decide the merits; in mediation\, we rely on the mediator to facilitate a sound settlement.  A key component in these arrangements is an inherent trust in not only the decision-making systems and rules but also the independent character of all the individuals involved in the dispute resolution process. We continue to reassure and justify to ourselves that our experiences in arbitration and mediation are sufficiently inclusive\, diverse\, reasonable\, substantive\, and even fair. But we need to acknowledge that there is still a gap between where we think we are and where we need to be with these issues. This panel will discuss and challenge our presumptions and provide valuable insight into what we can do individually and collectively to consciously overcome these dispute resolution blind spots. \nSpeakers\n\nAngela Banks\, Professor of Law\, Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law\nGary Benton\, Chairman\, SVAMC\nJeffery Daar\, Principal\, Daar & Newman\nReginald Holmes\, Mediator\, Arbitrator and Settlement Counselor\nMimi Lee\, Managing Counsel\, Chevron\nMontserrat Manzano\, Partner\, Von Wobeser y Sierra\nLuan Tran\, Partner\, King & Spaulding\nSteven Andersen (Moderator)\, Vice President\, ICDR\n\nEligible for 1.5 participatory MCLE credits; 1.5 recognition and elimination of bias \nDate & Time\nOctober 12\, 2021\n12:00pm – 1:30pm Pacific \nPricing\nNon-CLA member price: $25\nCLA member price: $15 \nClick here to register
