Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping international arbitration, shifting from a research aid to a tool capable of managing complex legal workflows. In a recent webinar hosted by the Silicon Valley Arbitration and Mediation Center (SVAMC) and Jus Mundi, Professor Abdi Aidid of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and Annie Lespérance, Head of Americas at Jus Mundi, explored how emerging technologies are transforming arbitration practice.
The discussion highlighted the rise of “agentic AI,” which can autonomously execute multi-step legal tasks such as research, document analysis, and drafting, as well as the growing use of hybrid platforms that integrate internal firm documents with comprehensive external legal databases. These tools are improving efficiency and elevating baseline legal quality, while reinforcing the continued importance of human expertise for strategic judgment and oversight.
At the same time, speakers emphasized the ethical and procedural challenges accompanying these advancements, including evolving expectations around disclosure of AI use and the increasing risk of deepfakes in remote hearings. As AI adoption accelerates, arbitration practitioners must balance innovation with transparency, verification, and responsible implementation throughout the arbitration lifecycle.
This article outlines five key expert insights on how AI is reshaping arbitration and what practitioners should understand as these technologies continue to evolve.
