UPC Momentum Builds as Case Volume and Global Relevance Grow

The Unified Patent Court (UPC) is quickly emerging as a key forum for cross-border patent disputes, with more than 1,100 first-instance cases and 300+ appeals filed since its 2023 launch.

In a recent JUVE Patent interview, UPC President Klaus Grabinski said the court has “become the European patent court,” citing rising filings, expanding case law, and adoption across both major companies and smaller innovators.

Key developments to watch:

  • Evolving jurisdictional scope, including a new CJEU referral
  • Increasing interaction with courts such as the UK in global disputes
  • Expected expansion to additional EU Member States

Grabinski points to “economic logic” as the driving force behind continued growth, reinforcing the UPC’s trajectory as a central venue for multi-jurisdictional patent disputes.
